ICO is, at heart, a minimalist game. There are only 4 characters with about 15 lines of dialogue throughout the game. Instead of 50 weapons and a plethora of healing items, all you get is a stick to fight off enemies. The object of the game is to safely get out of a castle with a girl who needs coaching to take a single step. Seems boring, doesn’t it?
Instead of being boring, however, ICO sucks you into its world and pretty soon you’re engrossed into solving the next puzzle to get out of the castle; hoping that the shadow hordes don’t come and kidnap the girl, Yorda, who you’ve sworn to help escape. In today’s game world where a dizzying array of weapons, characters, battle systems, etc., are the norm, ICO’s measured pace is a breath of fresh air. Granted, the game is not for everyone. If you like puzzle games, great atmosphere and a minimalist approach to games, this is for you. And even if you don’t like that stuff, who knows? Give it a try. You might be surprised.
